The Refit - Steel Work
End of November Nieuwe Zorg was hauled out by Scheepsreparatie Friesland
At 104 years of age, she's still a very pretty lady
Her last refit was thirty-seven years ago; it was time for fresh a make-over
She was hauled inside
Her interior was completely gutted
The bulkhead between salon and engine room was moved aft 1.15 metres
Braces and tabs were welded to the interior of the roef
The roef was cut at the low point of its graceful curve and a bit above the side decks
The roef was moved aft 1.15 metres and lifted 11 centimeters
It was then tacked into position with welded tabs
New steel was added to fill the gaps. Now there is comfortable standing headroom
The riveted iron is over a century old, but looks very fresh
The old salon windows were removed and their holes enlarged
Forward, two larger opening portlights replaced three smaller fixed ones on each side
In the engine room, the aft end of bilge was lowered to take the new power train
This added a small tapered box leading to the rudder skeg
New propane lockers were built flanking the mast tabernacle
In April a caisson was welded in the tabernacle down through the hull bottom to take a spud pole
